Kabeljous is the kind of place that locals mention quietly and visitors rarely find on their own. A small coastal reserve on the edge of St Francis Bay, it covers a stretch of indigenous fynbos with a network of easy walking trails that lead through the scrubland down to a deserted beach. It is quiet, unhurried, and exactly what you want after a few days of activity.
The fynbos is excellent birdwatching territory. The Eastern Cape coast supports a good range of coastal and scrubland species, and the reserve is far enough from the main beach to feel genuinely undisturbed. Bring binoculars if you have them. The trails are well-marked and easy underfoot — no scrambling or specialist gear required — and accessible for most fitness levels.
The beach at the end of the main trail is the payoff: calm, clean and almost always empty. Allow a half-day for the full outing. A morning here followed by lunch at The Riviera on the canal is a near-perfect St Francis Bay day.
