Cape St Francis Point Break

Cape St Francis holds one of surfing's great pieces of folklore. It was here, in 1963, that Bruce Brown filmed the perfect wave sequence for his documentary The Endless Summer — a long, clean, predictable right-hand point break that seemed too good to be true. The film came out in 1966, introduced the world to the idea of travelling in search of waves, and cemented Cape St Francis on surfing's mental map for the next sixty years.

On the right day, it still delivers. The wave breaks over a rocky point and throws up long, smooth rides that reward patience and precision. It needs south to south-west swell to fire properly, and the wind matters just as much. Check the forecast the evening before: the wrong conditions and it is flat as glass; the right combination and it is a genuine highlight of any trip to the Eastern Cape.

This is not a wave for beginners. The rocky entry and exit require experience, and the wave has real power on bigger days. If you are learning or returning to surfing after a long break, St Francis Bay Beach Break is the right starting point. For experienced surfers, this is the reason to be in St Francis at all. After the session, The Riviera or Bunkers are both well set up for lunch.

Practical Best on south to south-west swell. Rocky entry and exit: intermediate to advanced surfers only. Check the surf forecast before heading out. No lifeguards at the point.
